An inquisitive eye is crucial to understanding the Origin System’s many mysteries — and every Tenno’s Mastery Rank reflects their understanding of Warframe. We will go over the need-to-know basics below!
Simply put, Mastery Rank is the level of your Warframe account determined by how many Weapons, Warframes, and other features that you've leveled up. In this way, it's like an experience point system that "levels up" your account. Note that your Mastery Rank is meant as a measure of your overall familiarity with the game; it does not have any direct impact on the stats like damage, health or energy.
How does increasing Mastery Rank benefit you, though? It turns out there’s an entire Orbiter’s worth of useful perks as to why you will want to rank up — including the ability to trade with other players, join clans, increase how much daily Standing you can receive from Syndicates and more.
Arguably the most noteworthy gain is that many Weapons are not equippable until you reach a specific Mastery Rank. For example, you can’t use the Acceltra Rifle until you reach Mastery Rank 8. That means anyone keen on using a particular armament needs to reach the appropriate rank. It’s also worth noting that a significant number of Weapons ideal for challenging late-game content typically have higher Mastery Rank requirements.
Luckily, increasing your Mastery Rank is simple! The easiest ways to earn Mastery Points and increase your rank is by leveling up equipment and completing Missions on the Star Chart.
First, let’s look at how your equipment impacts Mastery Rank overall. Most things you can level up in Warframe yield Mastery Points, including Warframes, Weapons, Companions and Archwings. Whenever a piece of equipment reaches a new level, you’ll receive a set amount of Mastery Points that will contribute to your overall rank.
As an example, a single Weapon earns 100 points per level, resulting in a total of 3,000 Mastery Points by the time you reach that Weapon’s maximum level of 30. Keep in mind that certain equipment pieces give more Mastery Points than others. For instance, Warframes earn 200 points per level, granting a total of 6,000 Mastery Points when that Warframe reaches its maximum level of 30.
Please note: if you sell, trade or destroy equipment once you max it out, you can’t rebuy a fresh one to gain more Mastery Points. The Mastery Points you gain are permanently added to your account, even if you no longer own that Item.
It’s also possible to gain Mastery Points by completing the primary objective of any Mission for the first time. So unlocking every node on the Star Chart will naturally net you some experience. However, you also can’t repeat the same mission over and over to gain more Mastery Points. It’s a one-and-done kind of deal!
Ranking up isn’t just about the points, though. Every so often you must lay it all on the line with a Mastery Rank Test! Once you gain all the Mastery Points you need to unlock a new Mastery Rank, there will be a trial to complete in order to actually advance to that rank.
Objectives for Mastery Rank Tests vary significantly from rank-to-rank. As an example, however, we’ll look at the Mastery Rank 9 Test. This requires you to utilize stealth and eliminate enemies using only Melee Weapons — without being seen. Completing the objective means permanently advancing to the next Mastery Rank!
To begin your Mastery Rank Test, select the "Mastery Rank Up" button that appears at the top of your pause menu. This option appears whenever you have enough Mastery Points to take a new test.
Important Tip: You can practice all tests ahead of time inside Cephalon Simaris' Sanctuary in any Tenno Relay. Do not pass up the opportunity to polish your skills, as failing the actual test results in a 24-hour time out before you can try it again.
