Community Spotlight: Coup De Grace

Finding good friends to play with has always been a top priority for Clans in Warframe, but some Clans make it a personal goal to see themselves at the very top of the cut for each special event or mission. It’s easy to assume that having your Clan’s name shine at the top of the leaderboards or obtaining that unique dojo statue is enough motivation to try and be the best, but usually it’s about a little more than that. First and foremost, it’s about having fun.

Of course, it’s one thing to speculate but another to speak directly with the source; which is why we’re so happy that Shadow Clan Coup De Grace was able to take a break from their usual schedule in order to gather a few of their members for a chat on a little bit of everything, Warframe.

NeoDarkSider and Evangelyte, as the Warlords of Coup De Grace why don’t you introduce us to everyone.

Eva: We just go by Neo and Eva mostly but this is our Clan, and we’re the two Warlords. We started Coup De Grace back around...before Fusion Moa?
Neo: About a week or two before Open Beta on Steam.
Eva: Yeah, so this Clan has been around since before the Fusion MOA time. We have Luck here as one of our senior officers and we have Nova, Seraph and BeserkingAce as the junior officers. Bobo is a recent Clan member but we love him. Hanzo is our resident streamer and one of our newest members, he’s only been around with us for about a week or so.

And where are you all from?

Neo: Well Eva and I used to live in Florida, then we moved to Thailand a little over a year ago.
BeserkingAce: I live in the Netherlands, a small country in Europe. It is next to Germany, which you probably have heard of.
Luck: I’m living in the USA, California specifically.
Bobo: I’m in the USA as well, Wyoming.
Seraph: I’m a Korean residing in the Philippines.
Nova: Minnesota, USA
Hanzo: West Palm Beach Florida!
Eva: Our Clan makeup is usually around 50% Americans or people from North America. About 15% from the European region and the rest are usually in the Asia region.

How long have you guys been playing together?

Seraph: Well for me it was way back in one of the events, Operation Sling-Stone. I joined the Clan about that time, was looking for a Clan to settle into. It was a rather crazy night because I ended up running a whole bunch of event missions as soon as I joined.
Luck: I think I joined back in mid to late November. I had recently left a Clan and I was looking for a new family, these guys were willing to accept me with open arms even though I didn’t log into RaidCall for the first few days. They were pretty nice about it.
BeserkingAce: I joined about one week before Alliances became a thing.
Nova: I joined just before Zephyr was released and I ended up farming the most Oxium for the research for the Clan so that pretty much cemented my spot here.
Bobo: I joined roughly a month ago, and I haven’t had the joy of grinding events with these guys yet but I’m definitely looking forward to it. I definitely fit in here, it’s been a lot of fun.

What made you want to join Coup De Grace?

Bobo: I had taken a hiatus from Warframe shortly after the void towers came out, I had just gotten tired and decided I needed a break. When I came back the Clan I was part of had pretty much fallen apart so I started scouring the forums, came across the recruitment thread, sent a message to Eva and was in two to three days later. I’ve just clicked with the rest of the people.
Nova: Well when I joined I was looking for a Clan through Clan search because of the new Tenno Lab, I was just looking around and I happened to stumble across these guys. I know my first couple weeks I was in RaidCall but I was really silent. Over time I’ve gotten along with everyone.
Hanzo: I started when the beta showed up, but once the Nekros update showed up I decided to take a break from the game for a bit. I came back to the game around two, maybe three weeks later and that’s when I found Coup De Grace.
Eva: One of the things we wanted to do when we made this Clan is create a really social and fun group of people to just kind of a big family. We just want everyone to talk, socialize, get along and actually play games together. It’s apparent by how many people log into RaidCall and actually play games together you really, really get to know each other. We even have other people from other Clans that like to hop in because their Clan VOIPs aren’t as active or full of people. Even bigger Clans don’t have as many people logged into their VOIP as much, and I think it’s one of the special aspects of Coup De Grace. We put being friendly and being social before the competitive aspect of this Clan.

What drew you guys to Warframe?

Neo: Eva and I wanted to play a third person shooter, and the first third person shooter we had just come from was Global Agenda. The developers abandoned that to make other games and there weren’t any other cool shooters out there because we don’t prefer your standard, you know, Modern Warfare games where there’s a lot of hiding. We like games where you have special abilities, powers, classes, and that’s what drew us to Warframe.
Once we found out that you guys [Digital Extremes] also have livestreams every two weeks we realized this is the first company we’ve ever heard of that took such direct feedback to improve their game and we thought that was really cool.
BeserkingAce: A friend of mine showed this game to me, I knew the guy since first year in High School so we played a lot of games together and he showed me the ropes. I love grinding, I love to play a hundred hours and get something and be rewarded for it. And I just really really love the art style of the game.

Is there a particular memory that stands out in your time in Coup De Grace so far?

Luck: Uh, yeah, recently! Nova, me, and EatPoo along with Enigmus were farming for the Loki Prime helmet in Tier 4 survival, and we were getting frustrated because it hasn’t been showing up. We eventually went for forty minutes for that guaranteed Prime part, and I was making a bet with Nova. I said ‘hey, I bet we’re going to get the Prime helmet next’ and he says ‘no we’re going to get Frost Prime helmet.’ What do you know, we got Frost Prime. It was a hilarious moment, Nova and I started laughing for the next twenty minutes.
Nova: Keep in mind it was our second or third key that we had ran for forty minutes so...
Luck: Even though we got mad it was pretty damn funny.
Seraph: Well, multiple, but I guess a recent one would be just listening to all the antics from the previous alliance we were in. I don't know what’s been going on exactly but it’s a lot of fun politics and ridiculousness in there. To me it was partially hilarious yet, kinda memorable because it’s my Warlords struggling and learning things about how these things work.
Eva: Yeah, he’s talking about the time before we left Eclipse. We put in a lot of work but it was also a lot of headache.
Neo: Before we left up to six people from Coup De Grace were doing administrative work and duties for the alliance whereas there’s a lot of Clans that didn’t have anyone doing anything. On average you had one or two individuals from some of the other Clans participate in doing battle pay or administrative work. Our Clan alone was putting up six members.
Eva: Even though we left we took some good memories with it, there were some things that gave us headaches but there were good things we took away with it as well. Meeting a lot of Warlords and meeting a lot of the other officers from other Clans. Before the alliance system there really was just a nameless person from that Clan.
Neo: Just a nameless Clan really. We had no idea the personality behind anyone.

Are you currently in an alliance right now?

Neo: Yes!
Eva: We’re currently building one up right now, it’s called Ice. We’re working very hard with it along with Clan Invictus and Clan Eximus Tenno (also known as ExT). Us three Clans that I’ve mentioned are the ones that are leading the charge, but there also past Clans that have come along for the ride like Celestial Shogunate, Death Legacy, Quantum Entanglement, Artifact Hunters...I really don’t know much about them yet, but I look forward to working with all them.

Favorite Warframe?

BeserkingAce: Oh, that’s a hard one! I’ll have to go with Saryn.
Luck: My favorite Warframe is Excalibur. When I first started playing the reason I wanted to play was for his super jump, and his Slash Dash looked amazing. Ever since then I’ve been playing him whenever I could.
Eva: I come from a long history of playing support classes in other games; medics, white mages, healers, priests, that kinda thing. So I guess it’s no surprise that my favorite Warframe is Trinity, even though she recently got nerfed I still love Trinity.
Hanzo: Loki. Definitely have to be Loki, and Nekros.
Neo: I tend to like a lot of DPS heavy Warframes. I used to play Nova a lot, then I switched over to Oberon because I love his Ult where he body slams everybody.
Seraph: I’m more accustomed to playing the technical crowd control oriented classes, so naturally I’ve become fond of Booben the engineer.
Bobo: I’m gonna have to go with Nekros, I like his utility. Bring him along in a survival mission and it just makes everything so much better.

...Nova?

Nova: Is it not obvious?
-Everyone laughs-

It seemed pretty clear.

Nova: Well, it wasn’t by choice though. Nova is a namesake that I’ve carried over from other games and I started this game just after Nova was released. It seemed just like it fit, forever since.
Neo: It was meant to be. -laughs-
Bobo: I’m gonna have to go with Nekros, I like his utility. Bring him along in a survival mission and it just makes everything so much better.

Favorite Event so far?

Eva: Oh, that’s a hard question. Cicero was the most memorable.
Neo: I think Cicero was our most memorable / favorite because it was so chaotic. It was the first event that lasted longer than a week, and then it was in the middle of the holidays, and then the points system kept getting changed, and then we weren’t on the leaderboard anymore, and then Eva and I actually went on vacation...
Eva: It was during Christmas so we were visiting family.
Neo: And then while we were on vacation we had other officers in our Clan taking care of things. We then found out the points system changed again and we got really concerned that we weren’t going to make leaderboards. Thankfully our trusted officers pulled through, we came back from the vacation just before the end of the event and we managed to tie for first place along with a few other Clans.
Luck: My personal favorite was the spy drone event where we had to go around killing these Grineer metal muffin things, and that was when I was playing solo. I was just running around killing metal muffins, and I found that amusing. I didn’t reach top 100, but I had a lot of fun doing that.
BeserkingAce: Some of the most fun I’ve had with the Clan was with the latest event, grinding the rescue missions. Neo and I played day and night and it was lots of fun.

I’ve seen a lot of holiday pictures, but do you guys host an event for every holiday?

Neo: I came up with the idea of photo sessions, and there are other Clans that use group photos for their recruitment thread, but I thought it would be a cool idea to do holiday pictures to add that one extra bit of fun for our Clan. Something to show the public that hey, not only are we competitive and social but we’re fun. You can see the quality of pictures from the first one to the present, how they became more organized. We eventually focused it down to holiday so we can make everyone more thematic.
Eva: We actually had a new member join a day or two before the summer solstice shoot, got to participate, and their first comment was actually ‘wow that was a lot of fun’.

Is there a particular type of room you wish you had to take pictures in?

Eva: Well...it’s hard to say. When we did the summer photo shoot we noticed there’s really no summery field of flowers. It would be nice if there was a winter theme for our Christmas photo shoots. There really is no winter themed room, so that would be nice.

Outside of the group photos do you host any other kinds of events?

Eva: We do things as a group all the time, like helping each other level. Sometimes we compete with each other in the Clan, like to see how far we can go with two different groups.
Neo: A little bit ago we had about eight or ten of us on and we looked at the leaderboards, and while we normally don’t compete on endless waves we had a few of us on that were itching for endless defense. So we went ahead and broke up into two groups, both went into Xini and gave one team a fifteen minute head start as both tried to get to wave 100. It was a lot of fun. People who weren’t involved in either group jumped from channel to channel in Raidcall to give each team updates, saying ‘they’re a little ahead of you’ or ‘oh you’re catching up!’
Eva: We don’t hold giveaways like Ringsnow does for Invictus, for us it’s more like if you need something just ask. 95% of the time someone will just give it to you.

Is there a particular game type or map that you find more engaging?

Bobo: I’d say those new interception missions. Next to those, I stick to survivals and defenses. I like the earthy tile sets, the overgrown landscapes and massive greenery.
BeserkingAce: I usually play mostly defense missions, but like Bobo I’ve been playing lots of interception missions. When you’re playing with friends it’s a lot of fun to make fun of each other when you lose a point.
Hanzo: I do like to play a more patient type. If anything I do like to take my time, stealth around, try to finish a mission without being seen. That’s why I have either sentinel or shade, and go with Loki. So I can get through a level without being seen. I try to give myself a little handicap as well, like if I get caught I have to start the level over.
Anywhere in the Phobos area is a very fun area. The whole area, location, it’s all very breathtaking. So much fun to play there.

Do you find there’s a lot of preparation involved in securing a competitive rank for events?

Luck: Yes, a lot of preparation goes into it. We do a ton of test runs to see what frames we would need, what items we need to bring with us, what weapons are going to be the best. We analyze the event and see what we have to do to get the best result from any mission. We usually take a few hours theorycrafting on what we should bring with us, what’s the best possible loadout and the best possible group. Once we do that we stick with it and tell everyone to run with that, or with a good alternative to get the same result.
Neo: As the Warlords we try to contact our members and let them know there’s an event and to try your best. We have a lot of people in our Clans that have real lives, and we try to let them know that real life comes first. We don’t want anyone’s job or college education to suffer. Just give it your best. Our goal isn’t to get first place but to build camaraderie and friendship out of competition.

Are there any features that have been announced that you’re looking forward to seeing implemented or expanded on?

Seraph: I am very curious about how these personal ships are going to work out. There’s been some information out there, but it just seems cool overall. At least I don’t have to stare at the same star chart again.
BeserkingAce: Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the inconsistencies in Warframe. Like the new Primes have added stats, I’m curious as to whether that will get implemented onto old Primes. As far as new features go, I honestly wouldn’t know.
Bobo: I’m excited for the Kubrows, for the puppies! That seems really neat. I’m also excited for personal ships, I’m curious if they’ll work the same way as dojos. Whether or not we can have decorations and whatnot.
Nova: One of the things I’ve been looking forward to is the sword and board, Silvia and Aegis. Other than that I was a bit excited about Aeris becoming an Infested tileset again. That should be interesting.
Hanzo: I did enjoy the melee features. That was the most amazing thing you guys updated, so other than that I can’t really think of anything. I’m pretty sure whatever you guys improve on will be for the good of the whole community.
Eva: I think the thing that comes to my mind, since we’ve been participating so much, would be the Dark Sectors. I hope that there’s something beyond the rails, and that they just keep improving and adding more content. You can’t really go wrong with that. I’m also really excited for the ships. I hope they take the ships and make them really customizable, very personalized.
I also hope when you make achievements in the game, like an event or a personal achievement, you can have a little decorative piece that you can put in your ship on a shelf somewhere. The key to making the ships feel like home is all those personal touches.
Neo: I look forward to the focus system that they’ve mentioned in the past. That will add a whole new side to Warframe so those who like PvP can customize their Warframe to another level.
Luck: So, I’ve been noticing that some ninja weapons have been released but that’s kinda come to a halt, so I’m hoping we’ll see more ninja weaponry like a blowgun or a secondary with utility. Like a smokebomb, so you can become invisible. I think that’d be pretty awesome.

So an electric polearm saw does not qualify as a ninja weapon?

-Everyone laughs-
Luck: Oh, I forgot about that.

If you could write our next patch notes what would they say?

BeserkingAce: Mother of God that is one hell of a question.
Eva: -laughs-
Neo: I think overall the community would be happier if the patch notes were a lot more detailed. I know a lot of other games list every single little change, and the trend is the community finds out all the little changes that weren’t mentioned and wind up with this sort of unofficial patch notes.
BeserkingAce: I think it would be nice to see, ‘All NAT errors have been fixed’.
-laughter-
BeserkingAce: You will never fall through the floor again.
Luck: That’s asking too much.
BeserkingAce: Doors will never throw you through the wall.
Eva: What about monsters not getting stuck again?
Nova: I’d like it if they didn’t get stuck in walls.
Luck: ‘Rhino has been removed.’
Eva: Oh! So many people would be angry, don’t say that!
Hanzo: I’m not sure of the drop rate in voids, but I would maybe increase those a slight bit. Not drastically, like if it was a 3% to 5%.
Luck: Tier 6 key!

Let’s just skip Tier 5.

-Everyone Laughs-
Seraph: It’s difficult for me to come up with what should outright be included other than, if there’s something new it’s there. If there’s a fix, it’s included.
Bobo: I want to see ‘Coba Earth tileset mobs not spawning in walls’. That’s one of the most aggravating things, when you get to wave five and the match won’t end because there’s something in a wall somewhere.
BeserkingAce: Darvo can now be bought with plat as your standard operator
Luck: Infested are no longer in existence. They will now be replaced with ponies named Glen.
Eva: Oh, I want to see Trinity Prime! -laughs-
Luck: What about the immortal skin for Trinity?
Eva: That too! I know! I’m sorry, but I feel like Trinity doesn’t get enough love.

So, are you pro-lobster tail or anti?

BeserkingAce: I’d rather look at a butt than the tail.
Eva: I do wish that the lobster tail would change into something else, like a normal back of a skirt. -laughs- So I’m not really pro lobster tail.
Luck: Honestly, the lobster tail has grown on me. I don’t even mind if it’s there. I accept it.
Eva: I don’t see it anymore. After playing Trinity for so long it’s just there.
Luck: I’ve embraced it.

If you had a message for anyone looking to join Coup De Grace, what would it be?

Luck: If you’re looking for a loving big family, Coup De Grace is where it’s at.
Bobo: If you enjoy the grind and enjoy social people then join Coup De Grace.
Nova: If you enjoy Warframe and are looking for a group of consistent friendly players to play with, Coup De Grace is the place for you.
BeserkingAce: I would tell them, if you’re looking for a social active Clan that has lots of fun together we would happily take you in and have lots of fun together.
Nova: Oh, and if you want to join CdG don’t join hungry because it will only get worse.
Hanzo: He took my statement, right out of my mouth. Other than that I would say Coup De Grace is definitely very unique. It a Clan that I’ve seen from Warframe that’s unlike anything else. It’s a place for you to have fun, enjoy Warframe, play with other people, and have fun. They also do tons of events, so that’s a lot of fun.
Seraph: At the very least, as long as you talk and approach someone you’re guaranteed not to be lonely.

A huge thanks goes out to everyone at Coup De Grace on sharing with us your unique experience with Warframe. Keep up the amazing work, and we wish you the best of luck in all of our future events!
