Community Spotlight: DogMan Dan

One of the best parts about Warframe's community are the helpful Tenno that go a step beyond in providing welcoming advice. Artists, bloggers, strategists and all manner of content creators who help not out of obligation, but because they just love to lend an extra hand.

Community Spotlight is all about getting to know these unsung heroes a little better, from learning what got them started to what they've got in store for us next. This edition of Community Spotlight we caught up with DogManDan, a Youtube content creator dedicated to sharing his advice and experience along with all the fun antics of his clan; the Night Owls Gaming Community.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Gosh, I really don't know! I'm a gamer and an entertainer; the founder of the Night Owls Gaming Community, the NOG Army Clan in Warframe, the Tenno of the Night Alliance. I love the game, I love to interact with people. That's what we do, that's what I do, I enjoy people and creating YouTube content in many games.

The sci-fi genre is what I really enjoy so that's why Warframe fits me so well.

What got you into Warframe?

One of the other guys in the clan, Kypex, he had mentioned the game at the end of 2012 in closed beta. December I think was when he started talking about it. I did nothing about it until he pushed me into it, and the day he pushed me into it that was it, I haven't stopped playing since that point.

Literally since February 2, 2013 was when I started playing and I think I've played every single day since then.

That's awesome!

I can't say it's like ten or twelve hours like other people, but I make sure that catch up with the clan and that I catch up with the guys in the Alliance. I make sure I'm in touch with everybody and everything is going along smoothly. If I'm not playing at least I'm interacting with friends and fans as well. I just enjoy doing that.

Sometimes people will catch me sitting around inside the relays and I'm just happy to hang out with people as well just chatting or answering questions they may have.

Can you tell us a little bit about the content you feature on your YouTube Channel? What kind of content you feature?

Sure! I would say the majority is sci-fi style, but I really enjoy sci-fi MMOs, co-op games, shooters. I also enjoy simulation, racing, and a mix of indie games. That's what I mostly focus on. A lot of times you'll see myself with the clan, with subscribers, with friends and other people. I love to make videos with people and put them up there because that's something that everybody loves to be a part of.

Sure I create guides, tips & tricks, overviews of new content and changes, but the videos we have the most fun with are what are commonly known as An Evening w/the NOG in which you are brought into some missions with the clan and we just chill.

What inspired you to start doing videos about Warframe's content?

Well, it just kinda happened actually. Prior to Warframe it was just me putting up some basic stuff, not really doing much, but I was so hooked on the game even in the closed beta stages. Just how well it was put together and how well the whole team was interacting with the community and how everybody is involved and a part of it…it just gave me the inspiration to say 'hey I want to be a part of that somehow, so I'm going to start creating content'.

My content in the beginning was just junk, I'll admit to that. But obviously with all the changes and help from so many other people. We're about 10,000 subscribers on the channel and I had around 150 when I first started creating Warframe content. With everybody's help I've grown, I've gotten better, more concise with how I make videos and create content for everybody.

Your New Player Experience videos are really helpful for fresh Tenno that want to participate in some of our events but may not know how to get their foot in the door. How do you approach weapon and Warframe selection?

I approach it with what I have in my arsenal on my secondary account. I keep it to low level stuff, I don't have a lot of stuff going on there. I've only got a few Warframes, a few weapons, and I definitely don't have a lot of Mods. By being able to keep it at that lower level experience it allows me to go in with the type of gear that lower level players have and walk through the missions.

I can say 'this can be done, that can be done, or you can do this - but it's going to require more skill than receiving enhancements from Mods'. I think that's what's really good about new players. They have to learn the skill of the game. If you can learn the skill of the game and people help walk you through that then Mods on top of the skills just make the game that much better.

Mods are just kind of an enhancement, and having somebody say 'yes it can be done with minimal modding', that's what it's all about. Whether you do it solo or with a group, that's what it's all about.

I get a lot of comments from new players, and it allows me to interact with them and get more content generated from questions that they ask. I recently had someone ask if I could do some basics on Clan Dojos, so I went ahead and did a basic video on Dojos and what you need to know. I did some other basics videos on Formas and Orokin Reactors and Orokin Catalysts so that new players understand what they are because nobody knows what those potatoes are when they first see them!

Overall these videos allow me to offer newer players my experience in playing this game for two and a half years now, and help them out. I just enjoy helping others. It just works for me.

Is there an event you enjoyed creating a tutorial for over any other?

Gosh that's a tough question. The events are so varied in how they work. Doing an overview video that says what the basics are and how to do it, I have to get those out fairly quickly so that people don't go into the event blind and get frustrated. You can get frustrated pretty quickly depending on the level and complexity of the event and if you don't know what it is or what's going on, so I try to put a little video out.

Creating those videos allows for immediate interaction with others on my channel and see what they're saying. As they come to the channel and start asking 'how do I do this or that' I know what I need to focus on and what I need to cover for the next few videos on the event.

You have a lot of videos that feature Clan members, like Dojo dueling nights. Is that something anyone can get involved in or do you pick specific members?

Dojo dueling night is a big thing. We have a couple guys, some of the officers, that try to get things planned up and I'll talk about it on the channel to try and make people aware. We have some subscribers and fans that will ask to get in on it even though it's a Clan thing and we're happy to have them.

We do them and learn from the experience of what went right and what went wrong. We've got a couple other events that we're working on that will hopefully involve some of our Alliance members and as we grow it out even further get more people in. We're always open to having more people in.

In fact our last dueling night worked out really great. We had Janzer doing his audiocast live during the event the whole time, so it wasn't just us recording and having fun. He was recording on his twitch channel actually broadcasting it and talking about what was going on. Fans interacted on both sides, and it was just fun. That's what we're trying to accomplish, having fun!

What's your favorite Warframe?

That would be Oberon. I think 99% of people that know me know that's Oberon since the day Oberon was release. It just suits me. The style suits me, and I can work with it very well in any instance. I have a whole selection of frames now that I know which I'm going to use for which types of Missions and Oberon is my overall anything Warframe.

It's one of those things that's helped my channel grow when Oberon was released. I was about one of two or three people that I know who actually enjoyed him when he first released. Everybody else didn't.

But over time with all the changes people have learned how to play him better, and you definitely see him a lot more than what you used to. Oberon will always be my favorite, and most used Warframe in the game.

If you could help determine what our next Update would be, what would you have us include?

Well, I would honestly say I would like to see more focus on some of the outer content that has been released. We have a solid core in the game, but I'd really like to see some more Archwing content released in terms of maps and missions and things you can do. I think that it's a great mode, but right now the way it feels…it just feels like a mode. It doesn't feel like a part of the game.

Being able to put that into the 'game' and having a lot more content for it, I'd love to see. Not a lot of people remember about it after a while, they just forget, and it's a shame because it's a really good mode.

Thanks for taking the time to share a little bit about your channel with us. We really appreciate all the work you've done in making our community warmer.

I'm happy to be part of it! Just happy I can entertain others and help others at the same time.
