An inside look at Clan RFKT

Community Spotlight: RFKT

There are a lot of ways to measure teamwork and dedication in Warframe, from the length of a survival run to how quickly a dojo can grow and expand. For many Tenno the best opportunity to test your collective skills are through our unique events and ranked Operations, where exclusive trophies and an established Leaderboard mean rewards for Clanmates and a nice ranking for the world to see how well you work together. Plenty of Clans excel on the Leaderboards, but few have done so with as much success as RFKT.

As a Shadow Clan that’s not only secured their name on the Leaderboard of every event so far, but also prides themselves on topping the Leaderboards for kills earned on a regular basis RFKT knows all about what it takes to stay on top of Warframe’s more competitive events.
There’s something to be said about the teamwork required for such lofty goals, and thankfully Clan leader PsychoArsonist7 and a couple of his Clan members were more than happy to chat with us about what drives their success, as well as share their favorite memories and experiences from Warframe so far.

Why don’t we start things off by getting to know where you guys are located?

PsychoArsonist7: I myself am in Brooklyn, New York.
NowImOnTheGrid: Canalfox, Ohio
FactorZeroxORG: I’m from Santa Cruz, California.

And what drew you to Warframe?

Psycho: I was very drawn to Warframe when I saw it first put in the Expos. I saw the game promo and I started researching on PC. You know, just getting the basic updates. The gameplay was something that very much attracted me. I looked into the modding and customization and figured ‘hey, this game should be pretty awesome; hopefully we can get in there’. That’s pretty much what brought me to Warframe.
Grid: For me it actually goes back a long ways. It’s kind of funny even talking to you guys because I was all for Dark Sector, back when Xbox 360 was coming out, and you guys released videos that felt much more in the Warframe timeline than in the Dark Sector timeline. I remember going back to those videos where you had all those weapons already back in there like the Burston, the Grineer, Corpus, Excalibur and all that.
I thought that was really cool that you guys changed directions, but I always thought the original concept for Dark Sector would have been a sweet game. I remember getting a PS4 and I saw you had this game up, I started checking it out and I thought this was the game that I was waiting for back in the 360 days.
Factor: For me it was basically chasing my friends. I originally had my PS3 setup with my Call of Duty Clan. You know, they all get a PS4 so I came to PS4. They all started playing Warframe and they kinda got me into it. I pretty much ridiculously surpassed all of them since but it’s still fun to go back and play with them. This is the kind of game type that I like where I can go and build up stuff.

How did you all come together into RFKT?

Psycho: I actually had the Clan previously from other games, but when I first got on here day one and was finally able to build a Clan key I wanted to get RFKT going quickly. I wound up getting Grid, who is now the General of the Clan (AKA the Chancellor in our ranks), he came suggested from other players in the Clan. He joined and has stuck through with us from the beginning.
Now Factor, we actually got him from another group of one of my buddies that runs a bigger Clan. Factor expressed he wanted a smaller group and he hit us up, factor came in and since week one with us he’s topped the Leaderboards with a 100k+ kills, first placed it, and since then he’s been making around 20-40,000k kills every week. We all try to keep and maintain around 20k plus kills a week, and that’s what drew us together.
Grid: I don’t think that needs much more elaboration from my end!
Factor: It was basically just that I was Clan hopping for a while, trying to find a group that I could really fit into and enjoy. I talked to my Clan leader when I was in a larger Clan telling him I was probably going to end up hopping out and he ended up saying ‘you know what, I got the perfect thing for you’. Threw me in a party with Psycho, and since then I’ve been talking to them daily. It’s a really close, tight knit group overall. Always partied up, always talking together, always killing together. I have mad respect for everyone in this Clan, it’s really fun to be in.
I also did not join just because I wanted a small Clan, I just wanted to design my own garden! That’s all I wanted to do. -laughs-

Is there a particular memory that stands out from your time playing so far?

Grid: The way I came in actually. I was in a general gaming Clan named Gunslingers when things first got started up. There were some members that were on my friends list that were in Warframe all the time. I just sorta messaged them saying I was looking for a Clan, and it just all sorta worked out. Psych was good leadership, we stayed at a size that I liked, a lot of people there have to go to a few Clans to find the one they like but for me it was: I need a Clan, there I am, just go from there.
Factor: I think the best memory of being in here was that one week where we got called out by that Clan, and we just all grouped up and...I spent at least 12 hours just killing and talking to everyone I pulled out 50k kills in the first day and I was like, wow. That’s not something I never thought I could do in a day. At the time my total kills were only about 180k. A third of my kills over two months and I can get that in a day. I feel like I can push all the limits of how I play this game when I play with everyone here. They help me be better.
Psycho: I definitely say I share the same grace with these guys, definitely when we got called out by that group. We were in the same Alliance and they said whoever loses has to put 5 million credits into the vault. I was like, hey man if you want to put the 5 mil in the vault that’s all on you. They said deal.
First day, between our Clan, we racked up about 250k kills. When we got to end of the week the rival Clan racked up around 320k and we racked up around 800 something. I know we beat em by around 440k kills. That moment there when we had been called out and the Clan really pulled together. We’re Rapid Force Kill Tactics, we get in there, we get out, we get the kills. We’re also known as Real Friends Kill Together so let’s get in there and let’s slam it out.
We just had everyone really pull together that week. We had ten members on the top sixteen in the middle of the week. That’s probably the most memorable moment.

Are you currently in an Alliance?

Psycho: Yes. The way it worked, we were in SE7EN S1NZ, one of the founding members actually. There were three groups, there was RFKT, OMNI, and Senestrel. There were four other groups in there to make the seven. The ‘v’ being replaced with a 7 to represent the seven Clans and the ‘i’ replaced with a 1 to represent us as the number one group.
We went 50 - 0 (win - loss) we had 50 battles, we took over five rails and we held them down. Nobody that came against us could beat us.
We felt at that time that we’re 50-0, we haven’t seen anyone on PC do it, we haven’t seen anyone on PS4 do it, let’s retire the heavyweight champions of the universe. So we just retired that. We did start a new Alliance and we’re basically just trying to bring balance and keep it fair game for the public. We stood for zero tax on tribute; zero credit tribute and zero resource tribute. Everything we put out for battle pay was actually paid for by Alliance members.
We really went hard, so now it’s time to just have this other Alliance where we can keep it fair so that everyone can play equally and not have people abuse taxes.

You guys manage to get a pretty spectacular amount of kills in a short amount of time, what’s the secret?

Grid: There are a lot of people that go to ODD or go to the rails, there are a lot of different ways to do it, but when it comes down to it we’re just guys who are really into the game. You can get a lot of kills but you’re going to have to sit there for a bit and do a little time. You get a lot of people who want to go run this key or that key, but it’s really a concerted effort. The secret is, yeah there are different ways of doing it but when it comes down to it we just have guys that play the game consistently.
You can look at the Leaderboards for example. We’re second on Archive kills, third in Cicero Crisis, second in Tethera’s Doom. We’re the only Clan that’s been going for a long time now, so I would have to say it’s the consistency of having the crew that we have playing with us.
Factor: The thing that helps me the most is that even though we’re only a 30 man Clan there’s always people on, there’s always people to talk to, there’s always a conversation going. We’re always laughing and having fun. That’s why I like the Real Friends Kill Together side of RFKT. We’re always killing together, laughing, having a good time. When I spent twelve hours straight getting all those kills we just had members poppin in, poppin out, going to bed then coming back and saying ‘dude you’re still killin here?’ Yeah, I got people here entertaining me!
It’s a fun group just to talk to. As long as I’m entertained I can just sit there and keep killin. It’s still fun. It never loses that part of it.
Psycho: I pretty much agree with the boys. You’ve got a consistent crew, the friendship there, you keep on talking and keep everyone motivated. All being together and joking around makes the pastime not feel like a job, but feel like a fun time. Warframe is very fun and feels like a good time, so we basically see it as why be there by yourself and be solo? That’s why you join a Clan, to work together.

Is there a map you prefer to get the job done?

Psycho: As far as maps go I would say anything along the T3 Defense works well. Anything with a good amount of waves on Orokin Derelict is good too. Derelict survival or defense is great, you can go for maybe an hour or so in there. It comes down to strategic planning. You don’t just bring a Warframe by itself, you bring a group. You collaborate the Warframe’s together.
Now that they nerfed Trinity you can’t really go in there and be immortal with her anymore, but you want to be looking along the lines of a Loki using Radial Disarm or Excalibur spamming Radial Blind. You want to do anything you can to make your Warframe a god. A Godframe. Anything that you can do to take on those higher, faster levels.
Factor: I like fighting Infested, where I can just sit up top somewhere and just be lazy. -laughs-
Grid: Sometimes that does help, when there’s not a lot of other people on. You just go to one of the Infested rails, sit there, keep your abilities on the pod and pick off the stragglers. I steer toward any of the rails. Sechura, Hieracon, it’s not like a specific map shines any better than the others it’s just a matter of keeping at it. We go to all sorts of different maps, if you stuck with one map you’d end up losing your mind. I don’t think there’s one that shines so much greater than the rest.

Do you host any competitions?

Psycho: We have! We’ve done multiple competitions actually. I’ve done some, Grid’s done some. We’ve done Most Kills for the Week, Longest Survival, stuff like that. We do those kinds of things for plat rewards, mods, any kind of the sort.

How often do you run them?

Psycho: We haven’t run one now for about a month or so, mostly because we’ve been so focused on maintaining the Leaderboards. After the callout the rails have been very taxing on the amount of time that’s consumed from us. But we used to run them every other week.
Factor: Even apart from the event rewards we had 300k a week. I was kind of battling against another Clan member who wanted to see who would get first on the Leaderboard. He said something like ‘I’m gonna go get 500k kills’ and I just said ‘Please don’t, that’s too much!’ -laughs-

That’s a lot of dedication.

Grid: -laughs-
Factor: Hah! Well he didn’t get there.
Psycho: He’s one of our more boisterous members. He spoke before thinking, probably.
Factor: I don’t think I even have 500k total kills yet, I don’t think. I’m pretty sure I’m just about to push that boundary, but not yet. When he said that...well that’s just too many kills. He would be first place in Mountain Clans just by himself.

Is there any preparation involved in securing a competitive rank during events?

Grid: Utilization of time, I think, is your biggest thing. You’ve got to know your schedule and when you’re in you can’t really deviate from the idea of it. If this is my goal for the week and these are the amount of hours I have to work with for the week then I have to make sure that I’m killing at a particular rate. If anything I’m doing drops me below that rate it can’t be for too long.
Factor: I still think the funniest thing that happened is the first week that I was in here, I think it was the last three days before reset. I ended up putting in around 300 kills because all I did was Capture. In Capture I would just get the target and leave. I was getting, what, two kills a mission? You really got to focus on what you’re doing, you can’t go into a Capture and expect to get kills. You need to utilize your time and plan stuff out, and focus on what you’re trying to do.
Psycho: I would normally suggest, or what I normally do, is depending on what game type I’m playing will change what Warframe I select. Depending on the faction I’m fighting will change my weapon, damage type, proc type. Basically something I’m able to go in with that specifically helps against that individual faction and mission. Something I can just walk in, slaughterhouse em, and I’m done.
When we go for group play it’s really just about being able to disable and destroy the enemy as fast and efficient as possible. Pre-game is just some quick planning, a brief chat, and after that’s it’s really just a matter of staying focused.

Not a lot of people play Warframe just to stay on top of the boards, do you think that gives you a different perspective in approaching the game?

Grid: I think really it’s just, maybe it’s just a competitive nature perhaps. You gotta understand, in here Psycho is a rank 15, I’m a 15, Factor where are you at?
Factor: Let’s just say not 15.
Grid: Well my point is we’re dealing with guys who are not concerned with what weapon to rank up, or what we’re going to build next. It’s not an issue to us. Right now the competitive nature takes over because we’ve done all the building and all the different things we’ve amassed for our profile. We’re at a point where those things are behind us, and now it’s a matter of saying ‘what do we attack next?’ That’s where the competitive nature comes into play.
Psycho: I’d have to agree with Grid on that. I’ve gone through every Warframe and Forma’d them several times, same with my weapons and sentinels and sentinel weapons. Since I’ve played through and learned the characters it’s like, what’s the next thing to conquer in Warframe? Well the next thing to conquer is the Leaderboards.
We’ve thought about going up in the Clan and going to Storm or Mountain or Moon, but the fact is we’re at 30 people and it’s such a close knit group that it’s not just a Clan. It’s more like family. Even though I’m the Warlord and Grid’s the General and we have a council and officers, it’s not really about any of that. We’re all equal as a group of friends. It’s so easy to not have that commanding role
I see a lot of Clans that are falling apart or have fell apart because they want to lead with an iron fist. You have to lead by playing together and becoming friends and getting to know each other. Having a nice close group of 30 I think is most of our success. We play as a brotherhood (or sisterhood for the females) of a group. We’re a unit, and I think that’s the real reason we have success in what we do.

Do you have a favorite Warframe?

Psycho: I’m a Frost. I’d go with the Frost.
Factor: Well it was Trinity, but then you had to go nerf her...But right now I’m between Rhino Prime and Saryn. It’s hard for me to decide.
Grid: For me I would say Volt for quite some time, recently I would say Hydroid. Some frames have all of their skills extremely damage based or utility based, and I like frames that sort of feel like a Swiss army knife. Generally when you maximize you don’t want to use all four abilities, but I feel the best frames make you want to use all four abilities.

Favorite event?

Psycho: We had a lot of fun doing the Cicero as hard as it was. You had us all in here saying ‘hey man we gotta scan some flowers, lets get this going!’ I’d say that Tethra’s Doom was also really fun. You could approach it a lot of different ways between defending the pod and manipulating the enemies in a way as to not get attacked.
Grid: I think for me it was Cicero. The massive amount of going into levels to find Jade Leaves, it just kinda holds a soft spot in my heart just because of the amount of work that went into that event.
Factor: I wasn’t even here for Cicero and when I did the Tethra’s event it was me with my rank 10 unforma’d Trinity being carried by my friend. A lot of that was ‘oh no, I’m in the frost bomb I’m gonna die!’ -laughs-
I loved Rescue 2.0 though, we got 34th on the Leaderboards for that even though the Leaderboards kind of didn’t matter. Once you got your hundred points you were good. But I had a lot of fun doing that. I helped out a lot of friends and a lot of random people that really couldn’t figure it out. It was a fun event for me, going through the motions and getting a bunch of specters and playing around with them.

What features are you most looking forward to see implemented on PS4?

Psycho: Definitely the new kinda Sentinel. I want my own Kubrow, I want my little buddy. A new thing to Forma out, a new experience.
Grid: It’s hard to pick but I would love to see a PS4 update where we get to see a lot of the weapons we missed. Just because the game didn’t exist on PS4 at the time, but it would be cool to have a patch that has everything we missed just so we would have all that stuff to level again. Being at this position it would be cool to have a bunch of stuff to level again.
Factor: I want a Kubrow. -laughs-

Are there any features you would like to see expanded on in-game, something that already exists but like to see developed a bit further?

Psycho: Well with the PvP we have right now, at our rank and our gaming style if I get a bullet in you you’re dead. You could be a full decked out Rhino, but I hit you with my despairs you’re going down. Maybe instead of a 2v2 PvP you could implement a 4v4. Something more Clan based or team based.
Maybe something with PvP and PvE mixed in too. Like players fighting players but also with enemies running around.

Have you seen the changes coming to Dark Sectors?

Psycho: Uh, yes! I heard of that actually. That would work, or something similar that has a lot of teamwork.
Grid: With the Dark Sectors I wish there was something...well like when we first started with Dark Sectors everybody was gung-ho and it was pretty easy. But after a while people got less and less inclined to run rails, which is understandable because when you’re running your own rails it’s kind of moved into a job scenario. I kind of hope that you would include a greater incentive for Clans to protect their own rail other than ‘this is our rail’.
Factor: I want customizable game modes where you can set the number of enemies, what kind of enemies and their levels. A place where you can test out your friends and really push the limits of a build without going into an actual game. Basically you can choose a map and say ‘hey I want 45 heavy gunners to come at me’.

Kind of like a Director mode?

Factor: Yeah.
Grid: That actually sounds pretty cool.
Psycho: Ditto.

If you could write our next PS4 update, what would they say?

Grid: It would be cool to see another faction. Maybe a few more planets added, but another faction would give some more different variants in enemies.
Psycho: I can definitely agree with Grid on that. What I would add in there would be something along the lines of looking at a ‘blast from the past’ thing. You get to play and get these weapons that were previously unattainable, because it was not added to the PS4 previous. Maybe a chance to get Excalibur Prime, a super special event, an armor, something of that sort where if we reach a particular goal in a week we can get a special item or something.
I’ve heard some interesting things and seen some interesting fanart for Warframes on the Devstreams too. I think I saw this female Warframe fanart named Omni? Goddess of elements of some sort? It would be cool to have a mass of pictures and abilities, have a vote between the public where everyone can narrow down their favorite skills into a single Warframe.

So like a community made Warframe where everyone votes on powers and art?

Psycho: Yeah something like that. Maybe even something along the lines of a customizable Warframe but you can take other Warframe abilities and mix them all together. To make your own Warfare or single or multiplayer use. Something that the players can really make their own.
Factor: I’m pretty sure the best patch notes we could ever get would be ‘PS4 now gets updated at the same time as PC’. I think the most frustrating thing is we have these huge intervals between updates. Some of us get bored really quick with nothing new to do.
Psycho: I think some of that is also on Sony’s side.
Factor: Another thing that would be cool is if you can customize the obstacle course. Design your own course and challenge your friends with it. Also, no autoroll. That would make me the happiest person in the world.
Psycho: -laughs-
Grid: -laughs- So many gaps when you’re trying to run through a level and you just hit an edge and roll right off after a big jump. It’s just awwwww.
Factor: It’s the most annoying when you’re trying to go for a fast time in the obstacle course and it’s those pillars that you have to jump from one to another, and every time you land on the last two or three and you just autoroll off. You just throw your headset, throw your controller out the room! No! Why autoroll?!

If you had one message for anyone that may be looking to join RFKT, what would it be?

Grid: I would say, if you look at the history of our Clan we’ve been consistent in the Shadow tier when everyone around us has fallen off. If you go back to the archives and look at the Leaderboards you’re not going to see a whole lot of names (if any at all) that are on more than one Leaderboard. You’re not going to see names of other Shadow Clans that have meddled in both events, we’re the only ones that competitively participated in both events.
If you look at our track record we’ve been consistently good, and if you’re a dedicated player that’s not interested in a large Clan environment then this is likely home for you.
Factor: Psycho makes pancakes on Mondays so, I mean, why would you not join?
Grid: -laughs-
Factor: I think one of the coolest things about RFKT is we’re all mic’d up, we’re all at the same place in the game. We’re always partying up, always talking, we’re always socializing. Rather than being in a 100 man Clan, 300 man Clan, 1000 man Clan; we’re a lot closer than that. We talk to each other all the time, know each other by our real names. We share some personal stories and talk about personal stuff, even out of Warframe we’re friends. It’s a really close group and it’s really fun to be in here.
Psycho: I would absolutely agree with both of them. If you’re a beginning player looking to advance or a moderate to veteran player who has everything done, as long as you’ve got the dedication and you’re willing to communicate and be one of the group there’s no problem. Basically becoming one of the family. If you want to work hard to get to that next level and are looking for help getting that next level, then RFKT is definitely the home for you.

A huge thank you to RFKT for taking some time out of their busy schedule killing the enemies of the Lotus to talk with us about their experiences. Good luck in your quest to bring equality to those Dark Sectors and enjoy those pancake Mondays, Tenno. We hope you enjoyed our first PS4 Community Spotlight, and be sure to keep an eye out for more to come!
