Community Spotlight: Yuikami

Warframe is a game that tends to be filled with some pretty evocative imagery. Space ninjas that battle against tyranny on epic planetary backdrops which extend across the Solar System. A greedy empire that seeks power for the sake of Profit. Two queens who wield an army to crush any who would oppose their influence. Or, if you happen to follow the talented illustrator Yuikami, a grinder where unloved puppies are tossed into.

This Community Spotlight we get to know a little more about Yuikami, who for over a year has been making us laugh with the combination of their artistic talent and sense of humor. Her comics cover all things Warframe, from Updates to Events and everything wacky that happens in between. And fortunately for us it doesn’t look like the madness will end anytime soon.

Why don’t we start off with you telling us a little bit about yourself.

I love gaming! I’m an illustrator and comedian at heart so I like it when people laugh. That’s why I try to come up with something to entertain people. And I really love Warframe.

How long have you been playing for?

Since April of last year, right after Easter.

And what got you into Warframe?

My whole group of friends were playing Warframe at the time, so then I decided ‘oh, I’m just gonna give Warframe a try.’ Then I got hooked so bad, I’m really addicted.

I play a lot. Like whenever there’s something new I just farm a lot until there’s nothing left to farm. Then I draw. Or if something spices things up, like some idea pops up right then, I have to tell people ‘please pause the game, I’ve got to write this down!’ Then I draw it later that day.

How long have you been working on your illustration?

I’ve been drawing since I was young. I started to take it a little more seriously by the end of high school. That’s when I was exposed to digital painting. After that I started to invest more in digital painting, and here I am!

What made you want to start drawing Warframe comics?

Oh! There was this comic back then, I think it was the first person to make any kind of Warframe comic. Have you ever heard of the Adventures of Loki and Mag? It used to be posted in the Fan Zone. He did around 12 or 14 comics, a really funny lovely story between Loki and Mag.

It was too bad that the guy who did it said he was not going to continue drawing it. I felt kinda sad about it, but it made me say ‘yeah I’m gonna draw comics too.’ Just like that. Not really picking up where he left off, but I kind of got the idea of drawing comics from him.

Do you find it hard to come up with ideas?

Not really, they just come up. There are situations where it’s just like, ping! Like when I’m playing with friends or when I find some boss in the game. Something to make fun of. The comics just come up like that.

What made you pick a four panel format?

It’s short. It’s universal. Almost every comic that I read whether it’s a webcomic or a newspaper comic, they always settle with four. It’s like this major four key panel, and if you can tell a story within those four panels you’re done. People don’t have to read a long page and I don’t have to draw a lot.

It’s kind of hard though. To squeeze all the things you try to tell the audience in just four panels. But it’s good practice too. If you manage to do that it just feels like, yay! Success!

Do you try and tell a story in every single comic?

Yes! If people take their time to look into each panel there are so many hidden messages. Like, for example the comic where they were going to form a party to farm for something. You would see this little Nova in the background saying that she’s nerfed. That’s going to be related to that moment when the new patch was released and she was nerfed although the main story of the comic was trying to tell people about something else.

There’s always little details like that if you take the time to look at each panel.

Do you have a favorite Warframe to draw?

Nyx, Excalibur, and Loki. Oh, and Nova! Shes one of my favorite because she’s really cute and really easy to draw. The one that is a little more complicated to draw, and actually makes me feel really good, is Nyx.

In addition to the comic you do other fan art as well. Will we be seeing a Sprag and Ven’Kra plush to go with Captain Vor anytime soon?

Maybe...-laughs- I just need to go outside and buy the felt to make them. I’m a cave troll, so I don’t actually go outside. I just sit on my computer all day and draw and play games.

But then again, if I have the material and the free time I just gotta do it. Just like Captain Vor.

How long did it take you to make Captain Vor?

It took me around three to four days straight. When the mood hits I get in the zone. I keep working on him because I expect him to be done. When I enjoy it so much I just forget about the time, and everything else. It’s so much fun, just like playing games.

Any tips for people looking to start their own artistic projects?

They’ve got to listen to their heart. What do they want to do? The most frequent question I see on the forum is ‘what should I draw?’ or ‘I don’t know what to draw?’ or ‘What’s the technique you use?’.

The Technique can be covered really easy. There are so many free tutorials on the internet teaching how to draw on Youtube. I see one major problem a lot of artists have is inspiration. There’s no major way to help something like that other than looking at other people’s work a lot. You’ve got to dig deep into the lore or the story of the game you’re into and ask yourself what it is you want to do.

That will make you enjoy working on it a lot more than drawing what it is other people tell you to do.

That’s pretty awesome advice.

Thank you! People should just do what they like. There’s a lot more to enjoy in this game than just grinding and farming. The lore just keeps getting better and better. If you want to get into it even easier then join the role-playing community. That’s a great way to get into it. Just do what you like! Follow your own heart!
